Do you have the habit of reaching for your pillow or turning on the first screen you open your eyes when you wake up? As incredible as it may sound, looking at your phone in the morning is not just a mobile addiction, but rather a complex and incredible psychological game of our brain is at work behind it. How does this cycle work and how do we get caught in this invisible trap? Let’s find out –
In fact, after waking up, our brain wants to make a new connection with the outside world. The insatiable curiosity to know what happened overnight, whether we missed any important updates, this FOMO has worked. The addiction to getting a new notification, a new update is so ingrained in our brain that checking our phone in the morning has become an automatic habit.
In scientific terms, it works through the Cue-Routine-Reward cycle. Where opening your eyes in the morning is the signal reaching the brain, now immediately unlocking and scrolling is the routine and the message or notification you were waiting for is the reward. The brain makes you do this every day to get this mental satisfaction.
So checking your phone as soon as you wake up is a natural reaction of the brain, it cannot be called a complete addiction. But addiction occurs when a few minutes of interest turns into hours of doom scrolling. However, it can ruin all your morning productivity or brain performance and make you addicted to your phone.
