If you believe that leaving money in your EPF account guarantees continuous interest earnings, that is not necessarily the case. Under certain circumstances, your money remains in the account, but it stops earning interest. Currently, the EPFO offers an annual interest rate of 8.25% on EPF for the 2025-26 financial year, but this does not apply to every account indefinitely.

When does interest stop accruing?

According to EPFO rules, interest accrual stops when your EPF account becomes 'inoperative'.

If an employee retires at the age of 55 or later, the account is deemed inoperative three years after retirement. Interest is not earned after this period.

If an employee retires before the age of 55, they continue to earn interest until the age of 58. The account becomes inoperative thereafter.

For instance, if a person retires at age 60, they will continue to earn interest on their EPF until the age of 63.

What happens if you move abroad?

Rules may differ if a person moves abroad permanently. If EPF funds are not withdrawn within a specified period after settling overseas, the account may become inoperative, and interest accrual could cease.

However, merely becoming an NRI does not automatically stop interest accrual; it depends on which specific EPF scheme rules apply to your situation.

What happens when changing jobs?

Changing jobs, being unemployed for a while, or taking a career break does not automatically stop interest accrual. You continue to earn interest as long as your account does not become inoperative.

When should you avoid withdrawing EPF money?

If you are changing jobs, it is better to transfer your EPF balance to your new employer's account rather than withdrawing it. Even if you plan to resume working after a short break, keeping the money in the account can be beneficial, as it allows you to continue reaping the benefits of compounding. However, if the account is about to become inoperative and interest accrual is likely to stop, one could consider withdrawing the funds or exploring other investment options in line with their retirement plan.
