His mother and famous playback singer of yesteryear Krishna Mukherjee has passed away. He said goodbye to the world at the age of 75. As soon as the news of her death came on the afternoon of Tuesday, 22 September, there was a wave of mourning among the entire film industry and Rani's fans.

After Krishna Mukherjee's demise, Rani Mukherjee and her family issued an emotional statement and gave official confirmation. The message shared by the family read, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Rani Mukherjee's revered mother, Smt. Krishna Mukherjee (75 years) has passed away this afternoon. Our family is deeply grateful to all of you for your love, prayers and support. We request you for privacy in this hour of deep sorrow and grief.”

Krishna Mukherjee was not only Rani Mukherjee's mother, but she had a long association with art and music. She was an accomplished playback singer of Hindi cinema and had spread the magic of her voice in many films. She was married to famous film producer-director Ram Mukherjee. Ram Mukherjee was the co-founder of Hindi cinema's prestigious 'Filmalaya Studios'. Ram Mukherjee died in the year 2017.

Rani Mukherjee was very close to her mother and she always mentioned her special bonding with her mother in her interviews. The real inspiration behind Rani's famous film 'Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway', in which she played the role of a Bengali mother fighting the entire country's system to get her children back, was her own mother Krishna Mukherjee.

During the promotion of the film in the year 2023, Rani had revealed that as an actor, she wanted to bring her own perspective to this character. He said that he had seen some references to the original story, but most of the character he played on screen was actually based on his mother. Rani had said that among all the Bengali people she knows, her mother is the most staunch Bengali. Be it feeding food with his own hands or applying tilak on his forehead, he got the strength and inspiration for that entire role from his mother only.
