Chennai Super Kings have turned to one of Indian cricket’s most experienced left-arm fast bowlers, appointing former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The five-time champions announced the 47-year-old’s appointment on Monday, bringing an end to Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise. Fleming had been with CSK for 16 years and guided the team to five IPL titles.

Zaheer’s appointment marks a significant change in CSK’s coaching structure. Unlike Fleming, who had extensive experience as a head coach before taking charge of CSK, Zaheer has not previously served as a head coach. His coaching and management experience, however, includes important roles with Mumbai Indians, where he served as Director of Operations and later Global Head of Development, and Lucknow Super Giants, where he worked as a mentor. His experience in developing and guiding fast bowlers is expected to be an important part of his new assignment.

As a player, Zaheer brings a substantial cricketing record to the CSK setup. He played 100 IPL matches and took 102 wickets, while his international career yielded more than 600 wickets across formats. He was one of the key members of India’s successful international side during the 2000s and was particularly valued for his ability to read conditions, vary his pace and use reverse swing effectively.

Zaheer’s appointment also comes at a time when CSK are looking to reshape their team after a difficult phase. His expertise could be particularly relevant in strengthening the franchise’s bowling resources and nurturing younger players. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan described Zaheer as a world-class bowler and highlighted his role as a mentor to young cricketers, especially fast bowlers.

For Zaheer, the move brings him to a franchise against which he had played several memorable IPL contests during his career. He said joining CSK was an honour and referred to the atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk as something that made the opportunity particularly special. He also expressed his eagerness to become part of a franchise with such a long and successful IPL legacy.

The appointment also ends the immediate speculation over who would succeed Fleming. Names including Eoin Morgan, Michael Hussey and Hemang Badani had been discussed, but CSK eventually opted for Zaheer, giving the former India pacer his first head-coaching assignment at the IPL level.

Zaheer now inherits a franchise where leadership, continuity and player development have traditionally been major elements of the team’s identity. His challenge will be to combine his experience as an international cricketer and mentor with the demands of running an IPL dressing room, while helping CSK build its next competitive cycle.
