Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the ‘’ (CJP), was placed under preventive detention by Delhi Police on Friday ahead of the party’s ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest at Central Park in Connaught Place. As Dipke left the residence of NCP-SCP spokesperson Anish Gawande, a police official told him that he was being detained as restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were in force in Connaught Place. The development follows a police notice warning Dipke against proceeding with the gathering without the required permission.
Why was Abhijeet Dipke detained?
A police official was heard telling Dipke, “We are placing you under preventive detention. Section 163 is in force in Connaught Place. You are being detained...”
What is the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest?
The CJP had called for a ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest at Central Park in Connaught Place on Friday. Police had said the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) had not granted permission for the proposed Tiranga Yatra.
The notice clarified that waving the national flag was not prohibited, but an unauthorised march or gathering in violation of the prevailing restrictions could lead to legal action. Dipke was also reminded to follow the Flag Code of India while displaying the national flag.
